Ginger-Berry Zinger Smoothie

Ginger-Berry Zinger Smoothie | www.vibrantlifearmywife.com

In the past, whenever I would get stressed or sad or overcome with essentially any sort of emotion, my inclination was to eat. So it was a totally foreign feeling for me when I completely lost my appetite after the loss of our child.

The problem was that I had already lost quite a bit of weight prior to getting pregnant once we got my thyroid medication dialed in, and then I lost about 10 pounds while I was pregnant and a few more when I miscarried, so I couldn’t afford to lose more weight. Plus I knew I needed to make sure I was getting in a lot of nutrient-dense calories to help my body heal. But that’s not easy to do when you have zero desire to eat.

That’s why I am so thankful for Dr. Sarah Ballantyne’s Collagen Veggie Blend from Vital Proteins. This protein powder, if you can even call it that (it’s SO much more), packs in three servings of nutrient-dense veggies and one serving of fruit, along with 20 grams of protein from collagen peptides per serving.

When I lacked an appetite and couldn’t fathom eating an actual meal, I would make this smoothie using the Collagen Veggie Blend and feel confident that I was still nourishing my body. Nourishing my soul through the grief process unfortunately hasn’t been as easy.  So I’m still working on that part, but don’t worry…. I do at least have my appetite back now!

As many of you know if you’ve been hanging around here a while, I have an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. While it’s not immediately life threatening or even that debilitating (for me personally – it can be for some), it still affects me on a daily basis. I often get fatigued in the middle of the day, I lose clumps of hair when I brush my hair sometimes, I have a hard time exercising because my body just can’t rally sometimes, I get frequent headaches, and so on.  Continue reading

Grain and Nut Free Granola from The Paleo Kids Cookbook by Jennifer Robins | www.VibrantLifeArmyWife.com

I was never much of a cereal eater growing up. I’d have the occasional box of Fruit Loops (or “shoe poops” as I called them) when camping, but generally my mom wouldn’t let us eat cereal because it was too “sugary.” Man, my mom was a smart lady. I should say is a smart lady because she’s still pretty smart. So it wasn’t really until college that I started eating cereal. I don’t know what it is about cereal and college but they seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly, or bacon and eggs, or cheese and anything else. I’m guessing it’s that it’s so cheap and that you don’t have to do anything to prepare it that appeals to the poor lazy college kid. At least I think that’s why it appealed to me. That and that it was easy to munch on during late night study sessions or on the bus on the way to class in the morning. Continue reading
